Vulcan Launches Data Center Monitoring: Tracking Growth Amid Supply Constraint

Posted on: April 25, 2025

This week, we have expanded our Vulcan monitoring capabilities to include data centers. Through a collaboration with IIR, we have acquired a database of data center projects.

IIR data indicates over 116 GW of proposed data center projects between 2025 and 2030. However, the realization of projects totaling even half of this capacity is improbable. A significant constraint is the ability to manufacture and package the necessary chipsets to operate these data centers. Current estimations suggest a global demand limitation of approximately 15 GW per year. While expansions are proposed, these will require time to implement.

This constraint underscores the value of Vulcan Data Center UC. Given the significant number of projects unlikely to materialize or facing potential delays, our monitoring provides critical intelligence for assessing the viability and timelines of these developments.

This week, we have added over 11 GW of data center capacity to our Vulcan monitoring, with a primary focus on near-term projects. The majority of these projects have not yet commenced construction. However, our analysis has identified 2.8 GW of data center projects that exhibit visual evidence of ongoing construction.

Many of our initial projects are showing up in Texas as the list includes bitcoin related data centers.

Our highlighted datacenter for this week is the 260 MW Memphis Data Center which looks to be on schedule to meet the start date of 7/31/2026 given land clear started, however given supply chain issues they need to put up a first structure probably with the next 100-200 days to make that schedule.

This week's Power UC monitoring identified four new plants: one solar battery project (with two plant IDs) and two solar plants. We are highlighting the Marion County Solar project, which has the potential for completion by the end of the year.

Given the current stage of development (land clearing), achieving online status by the end of 2025 will be challenging but is not currently impossible. Our current projections for both our base and accelerated scenarios indicate a January 2026 online date.
