The Unseen Progress: What Satellite Imagery Reveals About Data Center Development
This week, we will delve into our approach to data centers, examining both technical aspects and our methodology for assessing their status. For our case study, we have selected the Council Bluffs Southlands Data Campus, owned by Google.
A comparative analysis of historical (e.g., Google Maps) and current satellite imagery reveals several observable features. Leveraging higher resolution, we can determine the locations of parking lots and identify vehicles through subtle color shifts.
Our analysis suggests that the construction of Data Center 1 (DC1) and Data Center 2 (DC2) at Council Bluffs is likely complete. However, the current state of their parking lots, which are not fully finished or occupied, indicates these facilities are probably not yet fully energized. Furthermore, Data Center 3 (DC3) could still be in a partial construction phase.
